A Rewrite of Lyon’s Rayan Cherki Being Available for Just €25m

Rayan Cherki is likely to be on the market soon. There were reports suggesting that Chelsea were in interest over summer.

Rayan Cherki Available

Caughtoffside’s report today on Lyon midfielder Rayan Cherki is interesting. They say that due to Lyon’s struggles in Ligue 1 this season, the highly coveted 20-year-old attacking midfielder will be available for a transfer fee of just €25 million.

Last summer, Chelsea were heavily linked to Cherki. However, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano recently provided some context, explaining that the rumors went beyond what he was actually hearing from sources. Cherki is a talented player and no doubt a big club will take a chance on him soon. But according to Romano, Chelsea only briefly considered the possibility of signing him and the interest was not that strong.

Chelsea Interest

Personally, I have my doubts about how serious Chelsea’s interest in Rayan Cherki really was. And I definitely don’t think any interest would have lasted beyond the immediate success of young midfielder Cole Palmer. Palmer is impressing for Chelsea right now after breaking into the first team.
Earlier in the season when Christopher Nkunku was sidelined with an injury, the Cherki deal might have been tempting. But now Nkunku is close to returning from his injury. With Palmer in good form as well, Chelsea’s midfield is stabilizing.

It seems another club is going to have to take a chance on Cherki’s talent. Only time will tell if he can live up to the potential at a new club willing to roll the dice on his abilities.
