AIFF President, Sports Minister discuss Women’s Football

AIFF President Praful Patel and India’s Sports Minister Anurag Thakur met up for a discussion focused on Women’s Football. The esteemed AIFF president informed the Sports Minister about the plans he has for the major events that will be held the following year. An eventful year awaits Indian Football as the country tries to stay on its feet in the battle against COVID -19.

In what would be a massive boost for the Indian Women’s football team, the country will be hosting not one but 2 major tournaments. Next year would kick off on a very positive note as India hosts the AFC Women’s Asia Cup 2022. Later on in October, the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will bring teams from all around the globe. The best major teams from around the world will take the stage and it truly will be a feast for the eyes.

AFC Women’s Asia Cup 2022

This will be the 20th edition of this tournament, with it being the 2nd time of India hosting. The games will begin on the 20th of January 2022 and end on the 6th of February 2022. Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune will be the host cities. This edition, the tournament has expanded to 12 teams from 8.

This serves as the final stage of FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. Five will qualify from the lot meaning that the competition will be cut-throat. Japan, Australia and China have already qualified. The Indian Women’s Football team have been qualified as host nation.

FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022

India was initially set to host the tournament in 2020. But owing to the pandemic, FIFA cancelled the tournament and allowed India to host the next edition. The tournament will start on the 11th of October 2022 and end on the 30th of October 2022.

This tournament will give a massive boost to grassroots football. It will be a stepping stone to give Women’s football the attention they deserve. The widespread awareness and interest will follow.
