Since his return to his former club as head coach in 2019, Mikel Arteta has been asserting his authority on Arsenal in multiple ways.
Approaching his four-year anniversary in the managerial position, Mikel Arteta, evolved as a head coach. Meanwhile, he instilled the same attractive and attacking style of football. That became revolutionary with the club during the time of Arsene Wenger at the club.
The Spaniard has remained unwavering in his commitment to these principles. Even during a period when his job was on jeopardy in 2021. Off the field, Arteta has taken a similar approach in managing player discipline.
Several players have been offloaded from the club due to not meeting Arteta’s standards. Former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil are the names to leave the club. But Matteo Guendouzi was also one of Arteta’s discarded players.
What happened with Arteta and Guendouzi?
The young French midfielder found himself in a dispute with Arteta back in 2020 during a training camp in Dubai. Deciding how to address the situation became one of Arteta’s initial significant tests as a head coach.
Guendouzi initially came out of favour but Arteta afforded him an opportunity to resurrect his Arsenal career before ultimately severing ties in 2022. Arteta, during that period, elucidated the reasons behind his choice to exclude Guendouzi. These comments served as a cautionary message to other players within the club regarding Arteta’s expectations.
Arteta said:
“It was about the way we train, the way we play, the way we live. I want the best players for the game and I select them in relation to what I see on a daily basis.”
“I just make my team selection and the squad in regards to how they play, how they train and how they behave. Every week it will be different. One week it will be on reason, another week it will be another reason.”
