Benzema agrees to stay at Bernabéu

Real Madrid and Barcelona

Benzema, the 35-year-old frenchman, was pondering his options following a glittering career in the Spanish capital.

But now his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu was set to expire this summer.
Nevertheless, the current Ballon d’Or winner, scored the winning goal for Real Madrid in their 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Reports suggest he has agreed to a 12-month contract extension, according to several reports.

Benzema had attracted interest from a number of different parties, including clubs in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore his former club Lyon wants him back.

However he will spend a 15th season with Real Madrid after earlier hinting that he would be willing to sign a new contract.

“I am at Real Madrid. I enjoy it, like any other player who can play for Madrid. What happens in football, we don’t know,” the Frenchman said earlier in the season.

Aging like fine wine is Benzema

His age has been a point of contention elsewhere, but Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti is said to have urged the club’s administration to agree to new terms with him. Ancelotti stated this over the weekend

“We have to take into account Benzema’s age, but also what he brings. He is our nine. He did well at the beginning of the season and he will do well next season”.

“For me, Karim is a lifelong Real Madrid player, I’m clear about what will happen next year.” He added.

One of the most honoured football players in recent memory is Karim Benzema. Along with winning the Ballon d’Or in 2022, he also won La Liga four times, the Champions League five times with Real Madrid, and 14 other local and international cup championships.
