Chelsea eye Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann

Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann might play for Chelsea next season.

Barcelona are amidst a financial crisis. They need to reduce their wage bill before registering any of their new signings. Ronald Koeman’s side are looking to offload some big names this summer.

Junior Firpo, Carles Alena and Jean-Claire Todibo have been shipped. Griezmann, Coutinho and Dembele are also being linked to an exit.

Failure to reduce their wage bill would violate La Liga’s economic rules, preventing Messi, Aguero, Garcia, Depay or Emerson from sporting the Barcelona shirt in 2021/22.

Umtiti and Pjanic have reportedly disapproved Barcelona’s decision to have their contracts terminated. The club has now turned its attention to Griezmann, who could leave to free up some cash.

Griezmann scored a single goal for France at the Euro 2020. He finished the 2020/21 season at Barcelona with 20 goals and 13 assists from 51 appearances in all tournaments.

Chelsea are looking at Griezmann as an alternative to Erling Halaand. However, Barcelona are only looking to loan out the forward for a season.

Spanish media reports that Chelsea are the ‘team that has been the most active in recent days’. With Dortmund keen to hold onto Halaand for the time being, an alternative seems the most viable option.

Griezmann is an complete centre-forward. He possesses undoubted quality and Tuchel would enjoy working with him.

The only issue is that the France international is 30 years old and various clubs around Europe have reservations about signing him permanently, particularly if a sizable transfer fee would be required.
