FC Barcelona interested in 30-year-old Arsenal midfielder

FC BARCELONA

Barcelona have this week been credited with an interest in a member of the midfield ranks at Arsenal, Thomas Partey.

It is of course common knowledge that the La Liga giants are currently on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park. A defensive midfielder is specifically what they are looking for. Barca have been searching for a replacement for their legendary pivot, Sergio Busquets, for quite a few seasons now.

A whole host of names from across the continent, in turn, have been tipped to fill the hole at the base of Xavi’s engine room over the course of recent weeks. And, now, a new profile has been added to the list.

Barcelona like the Ghana international

Adrian Sanchez was speaking on the Mas Que Pelotas podcast recently. He said: “One of the names that [the Barcelona] sports management likes most is Thomas Partey.”

Barcelona are desperate for a number six. However, Sanchez’s words are a bit questionable given the widespread rumors of Joshua Kimmich to Barca.

Last summer, the Catalan club signed 32-year-old, former academy graduate, Oriol Romeu, as a short term replacement for the departed Busquets. However, he hasn’t featured much lately. Xavi has preferred to play Andreas Christensen, who is a center-back by trait, as a defensive midfielder.

Partey certainly fits the bill for Barcelona purely from a financial point of view

Ghanaian international Partey’s current Arsenal contract is due to expire in the summer of 2025. And there has been a lack of progress made towards a renewal. This means that he could be available this summer for a cut-price fee. Alternatively, the early groundwork could even be laid for a free transfer in 12 months’ time.

Partey is the type of player Barcelona will be looking for most probably – a quality player with not many years left on his contract.
