Laporta confirms Barcelona effort to resign Neymar

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirm that his club did try to resign Neymar from PSG. The Brazilian has constantly been part of the transfer rumour that linked him with a return to Camp Nou.

The latest report came when Laporta said their intention to resign Neymar. Barcelona famously let go of the 29-year-old in 2017 for a world record fee of €222 million.

Though Laporta said that Barcelona tried to resign Neymar, the financial situation says a very different story. The Blaugrana are undergoing a financial crisis, which saw them forced to let go of Lionel Messi on free this summer.

BARCELONA STILL REGRETTING NEYMAR SALE

Neymar was an integral part of the Barcelona squad that dominated Europe in the mid-2010. The Brazilian in his 186 appearances for the club across all seasons, scored 105 goals and assisted 76. It was a huge shock when Barcelona sold him to PSG in 2017.

Ever since his departure, Neymar has featured 123 times for PSG. He bagged 88 goals and 54 assists for his team and took them a first-ever Champions League final. Since his move, Neymar was constantly linked with a move back to Barcelona, though PSG was not ready to sell him.

As for Barcelona, the sale of Neymar was a precursor to their current situation. The club spend even more money to replace the Brazilian quality but had very bad results. They are currently undergoing a very difficult financial situation, mostly due to their poor transfer strategy and mounting wages.

In the end, not signing Neymar was a good decision for Barca as it would further destroy their financial situation. It is now more important to strengthen the club through shrewd signings rather than making a statement in the market. Barcelona is currently 9th in the La Liga table with just 12 points from their first 7 matches.
