Man City reportedly scouted £35m Chelsea player this week

Manchester City

It is understood that Manchester City were at the Signal Iduna Park this week to watch Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen. The 22-year-old left-back is on loan at Borussia Dortmund until the summer after joining in January.

Maatsen signed an extension to 2026 with Chelsea but that included a £35 million release clause. It will almost certainly be met. Dortmund hope and believe the fact Maatsen has performed so well for them, that he will make it clear they are the club he wants to join.

Dortmund have certainly been delighted with Maatsen’s form. However, that has inevitably seen him emerge on the radar of other clubs, including Manchester City.

Top clubs interested in Chelsea full-back Maatsen

It is understood that Man City are one of the clubs following the Dutchman’s progress. They are looking for a left-back this summer and Maatsen is someone they are doing their work on. Hence, they had scouts at the Dortmund vs PSG UCL semi-final first leg.

Along with City, Bayern Munich are confirmed admirers of Maatsen. Although their interest in him is tied to Real Madrid‘s move for Alphonso Davies.

It was also reported that Aston Villa were also at the game. They have indeed been making checks on Maatsen in recent weeks as they plan for a likely Champions League campaign next season.

Maatsen had a good game against PSG

Maatsen, the Chelsea loanee, played the full 90 minutes as Dortmund picked up a 1-0 win over PSG in the first leg of the UCL semi-final. According to Sofascore, he was Dortmund’s second-highest-rated player on the night, behind star man Sancho.

On the night, he made 4 clearances and 2 tackles. In addition, he won 5 out of 11 ground duels while completing 37 passes with a success rate of over 90%.
