Tottenham closing in on a deal with Bologna for Tomiyasu

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on a deal for Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu as per the report in Football Insider

The defender joined the Serie A side from Sint-Truidense V.V for €9 million back in 2019. He had a stellar 2020-21 season with the Rossoblu, scoring two goals in 31 league appearances and helping his team to a mid-table finish. The English club are prioritising players from the Italian league, following the arrival of Fabio Paratici as the sporting director.

After electing Nuno Espirito Santo as the Spurs’ manager, the club are looking to sign defender’s this summer. The Portuguese likes to deploy the back three system. And the Lilly Whites are in the market for a few defenders. After allowing Toby Alderweireld to leave the club, Tottenham already secured the signing of Christian Romero for an initial loan and obligation to buy for €55 million.

Will Tottenham sign Tomiyasu this summer?

According to the report in Football Insider, Tottenham have reopened the Tomiyasu talk with Bologna. After the Rossoblu rejected Spurs’ initial offer of £15.5 million, the English club increased the amount to £17 million. The Lillywhites are growing confident that a deal can be agreed upon with Bologna after the new bid. With the defender still three years remaining in his current contract the fee seems pretty reasonable for Spurs.

The report further claims that the defender is open to a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer. And Paratici has already agreed on personal terms with the Japanese international. The deal is an initial loan with an obligation to buy which is quite common in Italy.

Despite starting the transfer business late in this summer transfer window, Spurs have started to gather pace in new incomings. Having already secured Pierluigi Gollini, Christian Romero and Brian Gil, signing Tomiyasu will make Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad stronger.

The Portuguese prefers to implement a strong defensive base to play a counter-attacking system. And he likes to have versatile defenders in his squad. Tomiyasu is a centre-back and also can play in the right-back position which will benefit Tottenham next season. So, the Japanese will be a perfect addition to Santo’s style of play.
