£75 million Tottenham target may now be closer to joining Chelsea

A report from 90min claims that Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is ‘open’ to a return to Chelsea. This comes amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Guehi has become one of the Premier League’s top centre backs since leaving Chelsea for Palace in 2021. Now seemingly nailed on for a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad if fit, Guehi is a man in demand. However, the 23-year-old wants to wants make a move only at the end of the season.

Guehi only wants to move in the summer

90Min claim that Manchester United, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are all interested in signing Guehi. Chelsea are also interested in their former academy player, and the player too is is open for a return to his former club.

However, Marc Guehi only wants to move at the end of the season rather than during the January transfer window. The center-back is playing a key role at Crystal Palace and wants to keep starting and starring consistently going into the Euro 2024.

Moving on in January may put his playing time at risk given that he would have to settle into a new club and new environment. Guehi doesn’t want to take that gamble and would like to see out the season with Palace before potentially making a big move.

Chelsea more likely to sign Marc Guehi than Tottenham

Guehi has been outstanding for Crystal Palace ever since joining them in 2021, and its understandable that Tottenham like him. However, there are a couple of reasons why we think Spurs won’t sign the English center-back.

Firstly, reports suggest that Crystal Palace want £75 million for him. That would be a club-record fee for Tottenham and they most likely won’t be paying that kind of money when they need to build up squad depth.

Secondly, Tottenham already have a quality right-sided centre back in Cristian Romero who is enjoying a strong season. Therefore, signing Guehi just doesn’t add up for Tottenham in 2024 and we think a move to Chelsea is more likely.

Chelsea need a long-term replacement for Thiago Silva, and Marc Guehi could be that successor if Chelsea decide to splash more cash in the summer of 2024.
