AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022: India held to stalemate by Iran

The Indian Women’s football team has finally made the cut to be a part of the prestigious AFC Women’s Asian Cup. India is the host of the tournament owing to which, the Indian team gets a chance to participate. They have a golden opportunity to fight for silverware at the highest platform of women’s international football.

India makes a return to the competition after almost 2 decades, having last played in 2003. Navi Mumbai, Mumbai, and Pune will witness the games for this tournament. India started off their campaign with a stonewall 0-0 draw against Iran on Thursday. Iran, debutants in the competition, put up a good showing.

The Indian team dominated but lacked the cutting edge to convert the small margins into a victory. India had a total of 16 shots in the game but failed to finish off their chances. They had complete control of the ball and dictated the tempo of play. However, they will be disappointed to come away with just a point.

Led by Ashalata Devi and managed by Thomas Dennerby, the style of play from the first match was definitely a positive sight. The women in blue must be at the top of their game with 2 games to play in the next 5 days.

Remaining matches and what to expect

India are scheduled to face Chinese Taipei and China in the next 5 days in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup campaign. China are the defending champions and the favorites to win the group. They swept away Chinese Tapei with a dominant 4-0 victory in their first match. Iran make their first appearance and their chances to qualify are slim. Meanwhile, India face stiff competiton from Chinese Taipei for the second spot.

The clash between India and Chinese Taipei, on January 23 is sure to be a mouth-watering watch. Winners of the tie between the two is very likely to determine the qualification chances of the two teams.
