Alonso reverses Monchengladbach decision, extends contract with Sociedad

Sports Bild reporter Christian Falk confirmed earlier with his trademark ‘True’ in his tweet that former Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso will take over the vacant managerial position of Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer.

They need a new manager as their current manager, Marco Rose, is set to take over the Borussia Dortmund side from next season. And Monchengladbach thought Xabi Alonso would be the right man for the job.

But, it wasn’t a done deal like Falk reported. Apparently, the 39-year-old Spaniard wasn’t convinced to take the next step as yet. Alonso is currently spending his time at Real Sociedad as a Manager of the reserve team. He doesn’t want to take decisions in a rush and wants to take his time.

Alonso to continue with Real Sociedad and not join Monchengladbach

Alonso started his professional football career with Real Sociedad. He made his first-team debut in 1999 for La Real. Since then he has played for some of the top teams in Europe. He won trophies with the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.

The former Spanish International won two UEFA Champions Leagues with Liverpool and Real Madrid. He won the World Cup with the Spanish National Team in 2010 and won two UEFA EURO in 2008 and 2012. He retired in 2017 with Bayern Munich and two years later joined Real Sociedad as the reserve team manager.

“I’m very happy with how things are going. I have had great communication with the club and I want to keep growing and helping with this project. These have been two very enriching years for me and the club. We have huge ambitions.” – Xabi Alonso told the club’s website.

The situation became completely clear on Friday when Sociedad announced Alonso agreed to stay in charge of its second team until June 2022. It is yet to be seen if he is promoted to Head Coach of the Senior team as that is the only possible upgrade to his current situation.
