Barcelona have reportedly wrapped up the signing of Marcos Alonso. The Spanish Left back was targeted by Barcelona for a long time. Coach Xavi was adamant about bringing a new quality left back to compete with Jordi Alba. Marcos Alonso was the best option as the Spaniard agreed to a deal months ago with Barcelona. Thomas Tuchel also confirmed that Alonso asked to leave and they would not interfere at all if he wants the move to Barcelona.
Last night Chelsea terminated Alonso’s contract with the club. Now, Alonso will be joining as a free agent. With La Liga’s transfer window closed, Barcelona will still be able to sign Alonso. This is possible because of one of the Articles of the FFP regulations in La Liga. It says that Players who have run out of contracts and are free agents can sign for other clubs outside of transfer windows. However, this will be only if it does not affect the competitive spirit of the competition. But Barcelona will be hurrying to make Alonso official to also register him in the UCL.
With Alonso joining, Xavi will have big choices to make. There will now be 3 left backs at the club with Alejandro Balde bursting through the scene. Jordi Alba is now the backup to Balde this season. So, Alonso will have to compete with fellow Spaniard Jordi Alba for the backup spot. It is understandable why Barcelona are strengthening the squad this season. There are so many games to play this season with the WC also approaching. The deal with Alonso is in the last stages and will be completed any time within the week.
Barcelona Have Wage Structure Issues To Solve
Despite signing so many players, Barcelona still have a lot of work to do. They have managed to register all their new signings in La Liga. But, Alonso will be the one left. However, it will not pose much of a problem as he will be a free signing. His wages will also be not very high which will make it easier to register Alonso.
The club worked on a lot of departures this season. The likes of Riqui Puig, Oscar Mingueza, Neto, Martin Braithwaite, and Samuel Umtiti have now left the club. This freed up massive wages for the club. De Jong stays at the club despite all the rumors of him leaving. Memphis Depay also stays at the club as his agreement with Juventus broke down. But now the squad looks to have players that are motivated to stay at the top.
