Ander Herrera set to sign for Athletic Bilbao

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

PSG have confirmed that they have terminated the contract of Ander Herrera. It was a mutual decision that required weeks of negotiations. Herrera saw no future at PSG with their midfield stacked. PSG also signed the likes of Vitinha and Renato Sanches to fill up their midfield. Galtier communicates to Herrera that there is no place for him and he should look to depart. With no club offering for him, it made sense for Herrera to terminate his contract and sign for other clubs as a free agent.

Spanish Media reports that Herrera will come as a free agent to sign a 2-year contract for Bilbao. He will have the option to extend his contract if certain conditions will be met. Herrera returns to Spain after a long time, having played for Zaragoza and Athletic. He then went on to sign for Manchester United, which was basically a failed move. He then signed for PSG and was a vital part in the squad until this season. Herrera does not see his place in the current PSG team.

His current contract at PSG would have run out in 2024. In addition to this, he has agreed to let go of a particular sum of money. This was due to the fact that he did not want his transfer to Athletic stalled in any way. He departs PSG after 3 years and have played with some of the best around. But La Liga is a familiar place for him and the 33-year-old will feel at home in the city of Bilbao. He represented them from 2011-14 where he made nearly 130 appearances in the club.

Herrera is happy to be back at Bilbao

On his move to Athletic, Herrera said:

“It is a great joy to be back. It’s been 8 years since i left. Those 3 years were so good for me. The club has not stopped growing ever since I left. The challenges and the demands are great because the quality of the team is so high. It’s a pleasure to be back here again. I will contribute the most I can for the fans to love me.”

Herrera left Bilbao in 2015 where he had a 5-year spell under different managers. He won the FA Cup, the Europa League, and the League Cup with the Red Devils. But PSG offered him a long-term project with immense growth that tempted the Spaniard to move to France. Now, he will be looking to make an impact in La Liga.
