A repeat of the finals from last season saw ATK Mohun Bagan FC(ATKMBFC) take on Mumbai City FC. The defending champions of the Indian Super League, Mumbai came into the game after an underwhelming defeat against Hyderabad FC. Meanwhile, ATKMBFC had won both their previous matches and were top of the table.
However, the defending champions found their stride and absolutely outplayed ATKMBFC to win by a margin of 4 goals.
ATK MOHUN BAGAN FC 1 – 5 MUMBAI CITY FC : THE GAME
Mumbai City FC was up to the task and started on the front foot. They took the lead in the third minute itself when a low cross from Bipin Singh found an unmarked Vikram Singh at the back post. The youngster then made no mistake, as he put the ball into the net with a calm finish.
Vikram Singh repaid the faith shown in him by his manager Des Buckingham when he got away from his marker to convert from close range to bag his second goal of the match. The islanders kept on threatening the goal of ATKMBFC and their persistence paid off in the 38th minute when Igor Angulo was set up by a towering header from Mourtada Fall.
The start of the second half made matters worse for ATKMBFC when Deepak Tangri was shown his marching orders for violent conduct in the 46th minute. The resulting free-kick from the foul led to Mumbai’s 4th goal. The skipper Mourtada Fall again leaped the highest to score from a towering header.
The stellar attacking display continued as Mumbai made it 5-0 in the 52nd minute. A simple 1-2 between Angulo and Bipin Singh left Bipin through on goal who made no mistake in converting. The wounded ATKMBFC managed to grab a consolation goal when David Williams scored a spectacular goal from a loose ball handed to him by Mourtada Fall.
The match then slowed down due to the numerous substitutions. A 1-5 humbling for ATKMBFC was the final result of the game.
