Bayer Leverkusen ahead in the race against Arsenal for German star

Arsenal

Arsenal has been dealt with a blow in their race to sign their long-time target. According to reports, Draxler is considering joining Leverkusen over Arsenal as he wishes to return back to Germany. The 27-year-old midfielder will be running out of contract at Parc des Princes and will be available for free this summer.

Julian Draxler is having a decent year at PSG. He has made 21 appearances and scored 4 goals in the process. Draxler was the sole scorer in PSG’s 2-1 defeat against Nantes on Sunday. He scored a superb goal to give them the lead, unfortunately, that wasn’t enough.

The World Cup winner has been linked with Arsenal from the time he used to play for Schalke. Before his move to PSG in 2016, The Gunners had made a last-ditch attempt to lure the German.

Julian Draxler prefers a move back to Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen

Draxler made his professional debut for Schalke at the age of 17. He was the 4th youngest Bundesliga player and the youngest Schalke player at that time. During his 6 years stay at the club, he made 170 appearances and scored 30 goals.

From there he went to VfL Wolfsburg for one season before moving to PSG. The Ligue 1 champion has been stalling the player’s contract negotiation and it doesn’t look promising either. Having said so, his contract ends in June and a return to his hometown is looking more likely than a move to the Premier League.

“You know we have been in talks with some clubs in England as well, but this time I decided to make the decision as to what I feel and what I prefer for myself. There were some teams that wanted me from the Premier League but it was not like it was very, very close. It was just my opinion that I am the best player for PSG at the moment – so that’s what I decided.” – Julian Draxler before he moved to PSG

Arsenal tried to lure the player from PSG recently with a swap deal involving Matteo Guendouzi and Hector Bellerin, only to see that deal fall through. The Gunners have a lot of talented midfielders at their disposal. Although Arteta would sure love to add more creativity with someone like Draxler.

That being said, Draxler doesn’t see a move to Arsenal satisfying him as he doesn’t expect to get enough playtime. Bayer will hope to land him by taking advantage as the only competitor. Also, a free transfer will help them save money to fund the player’s salary.
