Bayern Munich eyes move for 20-year-old Hugo Ekitike from Reims

Italian goalkeeper

The increasingly likely departure of Robert Lewandowski has pushed Bayern Munich to look for a replacement in the market. The German Champions have identified Hugo Ekitike of Stade de Reims as an option to fill the void that will be created by the outgoing Lewandowski.

Hugo Ekitike promises long-term stability

Ekitike was impressive for the French club in the 2021/22 season. He scored 11 goals and provided 5 assists in 27 appearances across all competitions. He is considered to be a future star and is expected to become one of the best strikers in the world.

Newcastle United had a deal in place with Reims for the striker to bolster their squad. However, the deal seems to have stalled in recent weeks. It looks like the striker could be signing for some other club.

How much will Bayern Munich have to pay?

Stade de Reims are hoping to receive a fee upwards of €30 million for Ekitike. Newcastle have reportedly matched the asking price for the striker. Reims would want other clubs to at least match the offer by Newcastle United. Hence, Bayern Munich will have to pay a similar amount or more to lure the player to Allianz Arena.

The Die Roten can move for the striker if they receive their asking price for Lewandowski. Bayern are demanding around €40 million for Lewandowski and can utilize the fee for signing the French forward.

Any deal for the French forward will only materialize if Lewandowski’s transfer to Barcelona is finalized. Hence, Bayern Munich are in no rush to sign the forward. However, they should look to move swiftly if they decide to part ways with their marksman.

Will Ekitike be an ideal replacement for Lewandowski?

Robert Lewandowski has scored 40+ goals for three consecutive seasons now and it will be difficult for any striker on the planet to mirror the success. However, Ekitike will not be expected to deliver similar numbers for the club. Bayern will look to utilize him as an option from the bench to change games whenever needed. The Club will also look to afford him enough minutes to develop as a striker under the tutelage of Julian Nagelsmann.
