Bayern Munich were impressive in their German Super Cup triumph without Lewandowski

Italian goalkeeper

Robert Lewandowski signed for Barcelona from Bayern Munich after a protracted transfer saga. The German champions have not signed a specialist striker to replace the Polish forward. Julian Nagelsmann chose to play his new signing, Sadio Mane as the striker against RB Leipzig.

The Bavarians won the German Super Cup after an enthralling contest with RB Leipzig. However, the attacking players thoroughly impressed the fans and the manager. Bayern Munich scored 5 goals as new arrival Sadio Mane also got on the scoresheet.

The Senegalese forward has scored in all his Bayern appearances till now. The forward has adapted well to the number 9 role and affords the team fluidity in that position. After Robert Lewandowski’s departure to Spain, the goalscoring burden will fall on other forwards.

However, the forwards seem to be relishing the opportunity to step up in Lewandowski’s absence. The Bavarians have scored a total of 11 goals in three games since his departure. Julian Nagelsmann has efficiently transitioned his team to a different playing style to integrate the new players.

Defence is a concern for Bayern Munich ahead of next season

Matthijs De Ligt has been signed to strengthen the defence after the departure of Niklas Sule. The German international decided to part ways with the Bavarians and signed for Borussia Dortmund. After David Alaba, Sule became the second senior defender to have departed Allianz Arena in the past two years. Lucas Hernandez and Dayot Upamecano were the only central defenders left at the club.

However, the German giants have now brought the Dutch international from Juventus to add depth to the defensive department. RB Leipzig scored three goals against the German champions and the defence was far from comfortable against their title challengers.

Even in the pre-season, Bayern Munich conceded two goals against DC United despite playing strong defence. The Manager will surely be concerned about the lack of clean sheets and lack of solidity. The club will hope that the team can work on the defensive side of things ahead of the next week’s opening fixture in the Bundesliga.

Nevertheless, regardless of how defence pans out, it will be fascinating to see how Bayern’s attack performs against the league opponents in the absence of Robert Lewandowski. The Polish international will surely be missed, however, Nagelsmann will be keen to show the world that his team is not dependent on Lewandowski for success.
