Bengaluru FC brushed aside Chennaiyin FC with 3 goals as they triumphed 3-0 at the GMC Athletic Stadium on Wednesday. A win meant that Bengaluru FC continue to keep themselves in contention for the top 4 spot.
The win saw them move up into 6th place with 17 points. The Blues are now only 1 point off the top 4 and are very much alive in the race for a spot. Meanwhile, Chennaiyin FC were yet again a victim of their own inconsistency. They dropped out of the top 4 and are now in 5th. They are now level on points with 4th placed Mumbai City FC.
Bengaluru FC 3-0 Chennaiyin FC: The Game
The South Indian derby started off with a good tempo, Bengaluru FC being on the front foot. The first big chance landed to Lukasz Gikiewicz, after a sloppy pass from P. Shrivas put him clear on goal. However, the keeper narrowed the angle and made an important save.
4 minutes later, Bengaluru were awarded a penalty after Vanspaul caught Chettri from behind in the box. Iman Basafa stepped up and coolly dispatched to give Bengaluru an early lead.
Sunil Chettri caused mayhem a few minutes before the break, after undoing 4 Chennaiyin defenders with brilliant footwork. He had an open goal in front of him, but unselfishly passed it to Udanta Singh who slotted home for 2-0. The first half ended with Bengaluru comfortably 2-0 ahead.
Second Half
Bengaluru FC extended their 2 goal lead with another credit to Udanta Singh. A slip from Damjanovic gifted Udanta Singh a free path goal-ward. Singh was briming with confidence after netting in the first half. Bengaluru were ruthless in front of goal and proved to be too much for Chennaiyin.
It was their own errors that cost them another game as their dismal run of form continued. As the business end of the season approaches, teams will look to get the best out of their squads in a bid to win a top 4 spot.
