Bidyashagar Singh: The Manipuri Trailblazer and I-League Champ

The 23-year-old Bidyashagar Singh hailing from Manipur and has taken the I-League by storm. The right-footed centre-forward is the first Indian to score back-to-back hat-tricks in the I-League.

“I would like to dedicate this record to my family, and to Prameshwori Devi, who was my first coach. She herself was playing for the Indian women’s team back in those days, and she is an absolute inspiration for me.” – Bidyashagar told the I-League

East Bengal product Bidyashagar signed for Tiddim Road Athletic Union Football Club (TRAU FC) in July 2020 and is now a precious asset to the Manipur based club. He has scored 11 goals in just 13 appearances for TRAU this season and marked his presence in the starting eleven for each and every match. Manager L. Nandakumar Singh would be looking forward to extend the young prodigy’s contract which expires on 31st May, 2021.

From Farm To Football

Playing football in a professional level was a far-fetched dream for Bidyashagar who grew up in Samaram Mayai Leikai, a small village in Manipur. His father who is a farmer by profession once dreamt of being a professional footballer was held up by family restrictions.

However, Bidyashagar always had his family’s backings and is now living his father’s dream. “It has been his dream to see me as a footballer.” said the youngster.

The journey from farm to football has been nothing short of struggles.

“During my initial years, it was very difficult financially to buy football boots. Sometimes, I even used to go to the paddy field to support my family.” – Bidyashagar told the All India Football Federation (AIFF)

What’s Next for Bidyashagar Singh?

Like every other Indian footballer, Bidyashagar Singh too desires to earn a place in the Indian national team by continuing his stellar performance in the I-League. Currently sitting at the top of the table, TRAU will face second-placed Churchill Brothers in the play-off.

Bidyashagar will be eager to help Manipur clinch its first I-League title while also bagging the highest scorer award. Meanwhile, rumors have surfaced that Bangaluru FC are keen to have the Manipuri youngster in their team.

East Bengal and Kerala Blasters have shown interest in Bidyashagar as well. Nonetheless, whichever team Bidyashagar chooses to be with, will definitely gain a lot from his presence.
