Bayern Munich yet again outclassed Borussia Dortmund to win the DFL Supercup 2021. The Bundesliga Champions won their first trophy of the season after defeating their der Klassiker rivals 1-3 at Signal Iduna Park.

Robert Lewandowski scored twice in the match, becoming the all-time top scorer in the Supercup history. Thomas Muller scored the other goal for Bayern while Marco Reus grabbed the consolation goal for Dortmund.

The victory also meant that new boss Julian Nagelsmann collected his first major trophy in his managerial career. Winning against Dortmund made it extra special after he lost the DFB Pokal final against them a few months back.

Both Dortmund and Bayern came into the match with multiple injuries in their team, especially at the back.

Dortmund made one change from the team that won 5-2 against Eintracht Frankfurt in the opening week of Bundesliga. Teenager Youssoufa Moukoko was promoted to the starting eleven after Thorgan Hazard was ruled out due to an injury.

The Bundesliga champions also made only a single change to the team that draw against Borussia Monchengladbach. French winger Kingsley Coman came in for Leroy Sane who moved to the bench.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND 1 – 3 BAYERN MUNICH: POST-MATCH ANALYSIS

THe match was not the prettiest, with both sides showing rustiness. There was many misplaced passes, multiple stoppages, fouls and plenty of yellow cards as the players didn’t hold back on their challenges. The first half was marked by brilliant saves from Manuel Neuer and capped of by a stunning headed goal from Robert Lewandowski.

Bayern started the second half quickly, scoring their second goal in the 49th minute. Lewandowski back-heeled a cross from Alphonso Davies only to be tapped into the post by Thomas Muller. However, Dortmund thought they were back into the final when Marco Reus scored a stunner from outside the post in the 64th minute.

Dortmund put the pressure on Bayern and started asking serious questions. The excitement was short-lived as Bayern scored their third goal of the night. A defensive mistake from Manuel Akanji helped Lewandowski to score his second of the night.

Though Dortmund tried to press ahead, the Bundesliga champions were too much for them. The game ended 1-3 as Bayern became the Supercup champions of 2021.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Robert Lewandowski (8.5/10): There is nothing more to say about Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker is in the form of his life and added two more vital goals to his tally. He was clinical with his efforts and was at the right place at the right time.

Manuel Neuer(7.5/10): The Bayern captain had a good game and showed again why he is one of the best in his position. His outstretched boots saved a sure goal from Reus at the 20th-minute mark. The game could have been entirely different had that went in. It took a magical strike from Reus to finally score past him.

Erling Haaland (7.5/10): Though Haaland didn’t feature in the scoring sheet, he was the most important player for Dortmund. He constantly made runs through the defence and helped in linking up play. Defenders found him difficult to handle, and though he scored, it was rightfully called offside. Had it been another day we could have seen Haaland holding the trophy.

For Bayern, the victory will finally be a push to get into the next gear. They will face Koln next in Bundesliga and will be hoping to build on today’s performance.

Dortmund on the other hand will travel to Freiburg for their Bundesliga match. The Yellow and Blacks will have to find a way to tighten their defence. All the three goals came from not having a proper defensive setup or through mistakes from their players. Both Mats Hummels and Dan Axel Zagadou are injured at the moment and have poor history when it comes to staying fit. If they are not able to address this issue at back, it will be difficult for them to keep up with Bayern.
