Chelsea eye new sporting director to pair with Potter

Chelsea

Chelsea are continuing their rebuilding process under new owner Todd Boehly. The Blues already sacked Thomas Tuchel weeks ago. Graham Potter is the new Head coach with a 5-year contract. This result came as a consequence of bad results under Tuchel. The club was not happy with how the team was performing. They also had their first loss in the Champions League on Matchday 1. But the sacking of Thomas Tuchel came as a surprise. The German, in his 19 months at the club, was very successful and had won the club its 2nd ever UCL title. But Ted Boehly and his group were not convinced with what he offered.

The rebuild now also continues as Chelsea look for a new sporting director. The Blues had a very underwhelming transfer window looking at the players they targeted. Chelsea were pursuing the likes of Dembele, Kounde, and Raphinha this season but no move paid off. The three now play for Barcelona with Christensen and Alonso also leaving Chelsea for the Catalans. Naturally, they had to settle for other players from the market. The London club ended up signing Koulibaly, Sterling, Cucurella, Fofana, and Zakaria. All of these were second preferences for the club and have come in for hefty prices.

Chelsea are now wanting to get Christoph Freund as their new sporting director. The 45-year-old Salzburg man has had a lot of talks with Chelsea and is reportedly looking to move from Salzburg. Chelsea were also monitoring the situation of Luis Campos who did not want to move from PSG at all. Liverpool’s Michael Edwards had also said No to Boehly and his team. Chelsea now believes that Freud is the right man for them. The likes of Haaland, Mane, and Upamecano were all discovered by him. However, he is not the only option with Tim Steidten on the shortlist also.

Who will Chelsea get in the end?

Reports say that Salzburg are not at all willing to let Christoph Freund leave. They are thinking of offering him a counteroffer to make him stay. But in case he decides to leave, Salzburg would not let him go that easily. Todd Boehly was the interim director when the likes of Granovskaia and Cech left the club. With the world cup in November, Chelsea wants the new director before that time period to discuss things with Graham Potter.

Till now, Steidten and Freund remain the two top names on the club’s shortlist. It will be interesting to see with which director can Chelsea strike an agreement. Both Freund and Steidten are known for developing brilliant players in their times at their clubs. With Chelsea not getting any of their primary targets, a new director was imminent to arrive. The Blues now play away at Crystal Palace on 1st October. Boehly and Potter would hope that the director’s situation gets resolved before that.
