Chelsea manager to face a tough hurdle while facing Brighton

Graham Potter

Mauricio Pochettino faces a significant challenge leading up to the Chelsea versus Brighton match this weekend. On Sunday afternoon, Stamford Bridge will host the clash between the Blues and the Seagulls. With both teams striving to ascend the Premier League standings.

Eager to bounce back from a disheartening loss to Newcastle United, Chelsea will like regain their winning form. Meanwhile, the team from west London had been on a commendable streak leading up to their match at St. James’ Park. Thus, securing a victory against Tottenham Hotspur and earning a hard-fought point against Manchester City.

Roberto De Zerbi’s team is on an undefeated streak of four Premier League games, although they’ve managed just one victory in this period. Despite Brighton’s confidence, they will be facing the absence of Lewis Dunk, who is in suspension. Additionally, the team will confront a pivotal Europa League group stage match away against AEK Athens.

However, Pochettino anticipates a response from his players, with a particular focus on Cole Palmer. The 21-year-old midfielder experienced a successful initial phase at Chelsea after transferring from Manchester City, showcasing his prowess by scoring four times in five games.

Can Cole Palmer prove himself at Chelsea?

Despite his promising beginning in west London, Palmer, like many others, faced challenges in making an impact on the right-wing during the Tyneside match. According to Glen Johnson, who spoke to Squawka, the England international is better in a central role that is just behind the forward.

The ex-Blues defender strongly advised Pochettino to reposition Palmer into a number ten role to optimize his performance. Johnson expressed, “Cole Palmer has been doing great.”

“He’s obviously got a great mentality stepping up for penalties and performing against his old team. He looks calm on the ball, looks like he’s enjoying his football and it’s good to see. I think he’s the real deal.”
