Chelsea may sign Ivan Toney as per urges from Gabriel Agbonlahor

Gabriel Agbonlahor has expressed his desire to see Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney. The 27-year-old has been consistently in a link with The Blues. Meanwhile, Agbonlahor, speaking on talkSPORT, envisions Toney playing at Stamford Bridge.

According to Sky Sports earlier this month, Brentford has set a £100 million price tag on Ivan Toney for the January transfer window but plans to retain him until the summer. Alongside Toney, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is another striker on Chelsea’s radar as they seek reinforcements in that position.

Gabriel Agbonlahor is confident that Ivan Toney would be a successful addition to Chelsea. Thus, he wants the club to sign him.

He said:

“Ivan Toney, for me, Spurs or Chelsea. If they can work a deal, maybe a 10-year contract, they look to do their contracts long. But I could see him at Chelsea. I don’t think [Nicolas] Jackson’s the finished article that Chelsea need and Ivan Toney, imagine the goals he’d score at Spurs or Chelsea, top player.”

How can Chelsea get a boost from the addition of Ivan Toney?

Ivan Toney’s goal-scoring record of twenty goals in 33 Premier League appearances for Brentford last season is indeed impressive. Joining a team with more skilled players at Chelsea could potentially enhance his goal-scoring capabilities. However, the transition to playing for Stamford Bridge would bring new challenges and expectations.

Teams often adopt a defensive approach against top clubs like Chelsea, limiting space and clear-cut opportunities. Ivan Toney, accustomed to a different style of play at Brentford, might face challenges adapting to the more compact defenses at Stamford Bridge. However, considering his strength, dominance, and clinical performance in the previous season, many believe he possesses the qualities of an ideal Premier League center-forward. There is confidence that Toney could succeed at Chelsea if given the opportunity.

As January has not arrived, there is no guarantee that Chelsea will sign Ivan Toney, especially given his reported £100 million price tag. Until then, Mauricio Pochettino may have to rely on Nicolas Jackson, who has delivered in Chelsea’s recent fixtures. Jackson scored to make it 3-3 in Chelsea’s 4-4 draw with Manchester City. Meanwhile, his hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur secured all three points in an earlier match.
