Chelsea to replace Pochettino with Enzo Maresca

Chelsea are on a lookout for a new head coach after current manager Mauricio Pochettino announced leaving the Blues. The Argentine announced the decision by mutual agreement with the club as they no longer have the same perspective to move forward. Although Pochettino brought Chelsea to 6th in the premier league table after a spirited league run since February, his future plans were not in alignment with the club’s. Thus the Blues have been on the lookout for a new manager since then. One name that stand out is Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca.

Moreover, it is reported that Chelsea have reached an agreement with Maresca. He can sign a deal in the next few days. Maresca joined Leicester City on 16 June 2023 on a 3-year contract with the newly-relegated Leicester. His Leicester side secured promotion back to the Premier League on 26 April 2024. They later became EFL champions. Maresca was awarded ‘EFL Manager of the Month’ four times in the season. Maresca has worked with Pep Guardiola as a backroom coach at Manchester city.

Chelsea in talks with Enzo Maresca to sign Players

Moreover, the blue has been holding talks with Maresca regarding players that he needs and suits his playing style. Meanwhile, as Maresca has given a green signal to joining Chelsea, they were in talks to plan and strategize for the transfer window. According to the reports by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano ‘Maresca wants to join Chelsea in the next few days’. The 44-year-old, is now Chelsea’s most favoured candidate to replace Pochettino, with Ipswich town boss Kieran Mckenna looking to stay at Portman Road and thus is out of contention now.

Fabrizio Romano tweeted –

Enzo Maresca has no doubts on Chelsea job, the agreement on contract is almost done and details of his staff are being finalised. Chelsea and Leicester City, in contact to agree on the compensation fee package for manager and staff. Almost there”

Why Chelsea opt for Marseca?

Moreover, according to Journalist Ben Jacobs the reason Chelsea opted for Maresca was that co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley were very impressed with the 44-year-old’s squad knowledge and thought of him as the most suitable candidate after conducting interviews.

“Chelsea like Maresca’s fit with their model and have been really impressed by his squad knowledge,”

 wrote Jacobs on X.

“Both sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley viewed him as the standout candidate. And the fact he’s learned off Pep, obviously another bonus.”

Attention on Transfer Targets

Furthermore, with the Blues to finalise Maresca’s deal anytime soon the attention now turns to the transfer market. Moreover, it needs to be seen how Chelsea will back their upcoming manager with signings. The Blues need to replace veteran defender Thiago Silva with a quality centre-back. Silva ended his long career at Stamford bridge on the final day of the season. Also he has joined Fluminese.

Conclusion

Chelsea have scouted Silva’s heir, Tosin Adarabioyo, the 6’ 5” Fulham centre-back could be the one to fill Silva’s shoes. Moreover, he could join Chelsea on a free transfer after his contract with Fulham expires on June 30th. Thus with a new manager and a lot of strategic signings could mean we might see a new look Chelsea with lot of expectations next season.
