Chelsea will be relying a lot on their young Argentine Enzo Fernandez

Graham Potter

In a scintillating performance, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez played a pivotal role. Since, the club secured a victory against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The London giants have faced a challenging campaign in the top-flight, struggling to secure victories consistently. However, they put an end to a two-match winless streak with a 3-2 triumph over Brighton yesterday. Fernandez emerged as the standout performer, contributing a brace. He initiated the scoring for the Blues and later sealed the victory by converting a decisive penalty.

While Fernandez’s distribution may not have been at its peak, with 26 passes from 52 touches, he compensated after excelling in other areas, winning 6 duels and completing 2 tackles. The 22-year-old has faced criticism for a perceived lack of creativity since his significant transfer from Benfica last winter. Chelsea fans will be optimistic that his standout performance yesterday signals a positive turning point in his form.

Difficult task for Chelsea as they can’t afford to lose points

With the victory against the Seagulls, Chelsea reclaimed a spot in the top half of the table, securing 10th place. The win was difficult, especially after Conor Gallagher receiving two yellow cards, leading to his dismissal before the break. This marked the second consecutive game where the Blues found themselves down to 10 men, with Reece James receiving a red card in the previous match against Newcastle United.

Fortunately, unlike the situation at St James’ Park, the Blues were not trailing, and they successfully created breathing space in the second half by securing the crucial third goal from the penalty spot. Chelsea will be facing Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. This will surely be another thrilling contest for fans to watch.

In recent encounters, the game between Chelsea and Manchester United has often ended in draws. However, Chelsea cannot afford another tie at the moment. Since, they are trailing by 10 points behind the Champions League spots. The club must maintain a winning streak to narrow the gap before the New Year. Fernandez is anticipated to play a crucial role in midfield against Manchester United.
