Crystal Palace look to strengthen their defence with the addition of Chris Richards

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Crystal Palace had a good 2021/22 season under the tutelage of new manager Patrick Viera. The French manager took over from Roy Hodgson and was tasked to take the club to the next level. The Frenchman saw a squad overhaul last summer as Crystal Palace released a number of stalwarts from the squad.

Andros Townsend, Gary Cahill, Scott Dann, Mamadou Sakho and Patrick van Aanholt were all amongst the players released from the club. Amidst such a squad overhaul, many expected the Eagles to have a topsy-turvy season.

However, the French manager led the club to a mid-table finish as they ended the campaign in 12th spot. Despite the departure of most senior players, the club performed well as the new signings settled in quickly. Connor Gallagher, on loan from Chelsea was a revelation and has managed to impress everyone.

Nonetheless, the club needs to sign players to strengthen the defence as Viera is short of options in that department. The Eagles have expressed an interest in a transfer for US international, Chris Richards from Bayern Munich. The club has reportedly agreed a deal with the German champions for an initial €10 million plus €3 million in add-ons.

Chris Richards is keen to complete the switch to Crystal Palace

The US international signed for Bayern Munich on an initial loan deal from MLS. The club signed the defender permanently after his impressive performances for the youth team. However, despite his huge potential, the American defender has failed to play sufficient first-team football at the Bavarians.

Richards has top flight experience with Hoffenheim where he spent the last season on loan from Bayern Munich. However, with the FIFA World Cup looming large, the defender feels the need to play regularly to earn a spot with the national team.

Bayern Munich has reportedly sanctioned the sale after signing Matthijs De Ligt from Juventus. The transfer will be a welcome boost for Patrick Viera as he prepares for the upcoming season. The Palace boss will be hoping for a better showing by his squad this season and push for a spot in the top half of the Premier League table.
