Six members of the first team at Chennaiyin FC have officially left after their contracts expired. These are all international players, which suggests that the two-time Indian Super League (ISL) winners would bring in a brand-new foreign team for the upcoming campaign.
Indeed, Nasser El Khayati, Julius Duker, Kwame Karikari, Vafa Hakhamaneshi, Fallou Diagne, and Petar Sliskovic are among the players whose contracts with Chennaiyin FC have been announced to expire. This seems to be a rather big move from the Southern club as they continue a substantial team change that began following the conclusion of a poor 2022–2023 ISL season.
How did the players that were let go fare?
El Khayati and Duker’s releases are undoubtedly the most important of these because they both enjoyed productive seasons with the Marina Machans in midfield. El Khayati dominated the ISL, appearing in 12 games for Chennaiyin FC and contributing five assists in addition to nine goals.
Duker provided five goals (one goal, four assists) and remained a flexible, hard-working engine in the middle third last season. Making him perhaps one of Chennaiyin’s most reliable players. Sliskovic had a rather erratic season, scoring eight goals and dishing out four assists. Although the most of his work was done in the nicks and crannies.
Karikari could not find the top gear for the Marina Machans and was primarily utilised as a replacement, scoring only four goals and contributing an assist. The defensive tandem of Hakhamaneshi and Diagne assisted their team in keeping three clean sheets, although Chennaiyin FC allowed 37 goals in 20 ISL games, falling short of maintaining a solid defensive record.

An extensive summer makeover is planned for Chennaiyin FC
The Marina Machans, who despite bringing in so many international players last season, could only manage an eighth-place finish in the ISL. Now seem to be making a statement with their choice. Chennaiyin FC has started looking for capable replacements for these lost players.
The mutual separation of Thomas Brdaric and Chennaiyin FC
Anirudh Thapa, Chennaiyin FC’s captain, too seems to have some questions about his future. As he has apparently been connected to a summer leave and potential move to another ISL team.
Edwin Leaves Chennaiyin FC
Edwin Sydney Vanspaul has left Chennaiyin FC, two-time ISL winners, according to a statement. The midfielder made 75 appearances for his local team Chennaiyin FC, which finished second in the 2019–20 Indian Super League.
Vanspaul will now finish his transfer to East Bengal FC. Joining up with his old teammate Nandhakumar Sekar, who is also moving from Odisha FC.
Thomas Brdaric, the club’s head coach, just said his last words
Also lately, the Marina Machans parted ways with their head coach Thomas Brdaric.
They are in the process of hiring a new manager, who probably will have some influence on the type of new signings the club makes. In order to assemble a team that can contend for the championship next season. The two-time ISL winners appear to have a very busy summer ahead of them.
