Sule to Chelsea transfer suffers new setback

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

After their Champions League victory, Chelsea are looking to strengthen their squad this summer. One of the major targets for the Blues are German defender Niklas Sule.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is interested in bringing Sule to his team. However, the club faces a new setback as the defender could sign an extension with Bayern Munich.

Niklas Sule has not extended his contract with the German Champions as it will end in 2022. There were multiple reports that claimed Bayern were willing to sell him this summer rather than lose him on a free transfer. But Bild has reported that the German will be offered a one-year extension to his current contract, which will make it harder for Chelsea to sign him.

SULE TO EXTEND CONTRACT

Sule was finding it very difficult to establish his place in the Bayern Munich squad. He was not a regular under former manager Hansi Flick. This made the player frustrated and hence is a reason for him to not extend his contract.

The contract situation meant that Sule could leave Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2022. Having lost David Alaba this season on a free, Bayern were not ready to repeat their mistake. There was also report that the Bundesliga champions were ready to sell him this summer to avoid any losses.

However, the situation changed after the appointment of new manager Julian Nagelsmann. Nagelsmann who had previously worked with Sule when both of them were in Hoffenheim, wanted to provide Sule with a new contract as he planned to work with him. Bayern is short in the central defence as David Alaba, Javi Martinez and Jerome Boateng have all left the club on a free transfer.

CHELSEA BOSS TUCHEL WANTS SULE

Chelsea are in the market this summer to further strengthen their squad. Manager thomas Tuchel will be backed by the club in the transfer market after his success in the Champions League.

One of the key positions the club is looking to strengthen is said to be the centre-back role. Though Chelsea currently has the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma in the squad, Tuchel wants to bring a new defender.

But the situation of Sule and Bayern means that a move for the German will not be easy and will not be cheap. Thus there is a bigger chance of the club looking at other options like Raphael Varane of Real Madrid or Jules Kounde of Sevilla.
