As per reports, Barcelona and Liverpool could go head-to-head for Leicester City’s midfielder Youri Tielemans in the summer. Both sides are keen on strengthening their midfield and see the Belgian as the ideal fit.
Initially signed on loan by Leicester, the move was made permanent in the subsequent summer. Tielemans arrived at Leicester City for €40 million from AS Monaco in January 2019. He has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders on show in the Premier League.
The Belgian international has become an integral member of Brendan Rodgers’ squad in this time. Till now, Tielemans has appeared 107 times for Leicester, scoring an impressive tally of 17 goals and 19 assists as well.
This season he has appeared 50 times while scoring 9 goals and assisting 6 in all competitions. He has also helped his team pushing for the top 4 places in the premier league to secure a champions league spot next season.
The Belgian also hit the winner in the FA Cup final against Chelsea last weekend. His only long-shot goal in the match helped Leicester win their first-ever FA Cup title in their history.
It is reported that Leicester is determined to keep hold of Tielemans and extend his current deal, which is due to expire in the summer of 2023. But if they fail to secure a champions league spot next season then they might lose him to some other clubs.
Currently, two heavyweights are in the ring for young Belgian. But the number of contenders might increase when the summer transfer window opens for next season.
Barcelona and Liverpool to fight over Tielemans
The Catalans are in the middle of a transitional period that is set to continue this summer. They want to make some changes in the next season, and they want to start with the midfield.
Barcelona has put on some midfielders on sale this summer. Riqui Puig, Miralem Pjanic, and Phillipe Coutinho are some of the names that they wanna cut loose. While then want to replace Sergio Busquets in the team.
One could argue that Catalans have the midfield department covered with Pedri and Frenkie de Jong coming in strong. But Ilaix Moriba and Riqui Puig have failed to provide adequate competition to them so far. The addition of Tielemans in the middle could boost the midfield several layers, especially considering the lack of creativity and shooting power there.
While Liverpool is also struggling end of the season as they go trophyless and fighting for a top-four spot in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp wants to bring some changes for next season as he hopes for better from his players. But he has to worry about two of his main players who could be leaving this summer. Mohammed Salah has been linked with different clubs and said to be leaving. While his midfield maestro Georginio Wijnaldum is leaving the club as a free agent.
Klopp seems to be focusing on his midfield options as he has shown interest in signing Tielemans. It is no doubt he would be perfect to replace Wijnaldum in the team following his Leicester form.
But signing Tielemans would be a hard job for both teams. As Leicester would be wanting a large some for the talented midfielder.
Currently, Barcelona is going through a financial burden due to the pandemic while focusing on signing a forward. If the foxes want a large sum for the player, the La Liga giants may not be to able afford it.
While Liverpool might need to focus on signing a replacement for Salah as rumors indicate the Egyptian might leave.
