FC Barcelona need to get their eyes off Chelsea star Marcos Alonso

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

According to Mundo Deportivo, FC Barcelona have approached Chelsea for signing their left-back Marcos Alonso. But Blues manager Thomas Tuchel has blown the offer from Barcelona as he tends to keep Alonso in his plans next season.

Marcos Alonso arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2016 from Fiorentina. The left-back became a hit under manager Antonio Conte as he was a key player of his squad. Following Conte’s trust in the Spaniard, Chelsea won the Premier League title in the 2016/17 season.

But his good time ended as Conte departed from Chelsea in 2018. Alonso faced less game time under Maurizio Sarri, as he preferred Emerson Palmieri over the Spaniard. While he featured much less under Frank Lampard, as the Blues legend preferred Bin Chilwell.

However, Alonso saw some playtime in the second half last season under Thomas Tuchel. The Spaniard ended last season with 17 appearances being the second choice after Chilwell. Following his less game time, it was rumored that Alonso would like to leave this summer. Despite having another two years left in his contract with the Champions League winner. While following these issues Barcelona and Inter Milan were ready to swoop him this summer.

But his transfer may not happen this summer, following the statement from Chelsea’s manager Thomas Tuchel. The German coach commented about the importance of having a versatile player like Alonso on the team. While he also talked about including the left-back in his plans for the next season.

Following these statements, it is likely that Alonso would not leave this summer and give another year of service to Chelsea. While there is no club in this pandemic situation to support the wage demand of Alonso. So, Barcelona and Inter Milan have to wait another year in order to table a deal.

Barcelona needs another option for left-back other than Alonso

The Catalans are having a great summer as they have already landed four players in this ongoing transfer market. Following these signings, they have solved the issues of attack and center-back for next season. But they are still in the market in order to add a new left-back option.

Barcelona is looking for a second option in the left-back position as they are close to load off Junior Firpo this summer. The Catalans bought Firpo in 2019 from Real Betis in order to replace Jordi Alba in the team. But the Dominic born failed to compete for the place with the first-choice left-back.

While the Blaugrana have also kept in mind to find a replacement for Jordi Alba this summer. Despite being 32-year-old Alba was able to appear 49 times last season for Barcelona. But the manager thinks it’s to replace the Spaniard stating the issue of his age.

Following these issues at the left-back, Barcelona have listed Robin Gosens, Jose Gaya, Owen Wijnaldum, and Marcus Alonso for possible signing. The Catalans were close to signing the Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso in the winter transfer window. But the deal fell off as Barcelona couldn’t sell Junior Firpo. However, they were again back this summer making an offer to sign the left-back. But, Thomas Tuchel has said no to the offer as he wants to keep Alonso for the next season. So, Barcelona have to focus on other left-back options in order to replace Jordi Alaba and Junior Firpo this summer.
