FC Goa suffer their first AFC Champion League defeat

The Indian Super League side FC Goa suffer their first defeat in matchday no 3 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Fatorda, Goa. Goa lost against Iranian powerhouse Persepolis FC by 1-2.

FC Goa skipper Edu Bedia made history by becoming the first player to score for an Indian side in the AFC Champions League. Despite the early pressure piled by Persepolis, it were the Gaurs who scored first. A cross by Brandon in the 13th minute were headed back of the net by Bedia.

The early boosted FC Goa’s confidence and within a couple of minutes, Goa had another opportunity to increase the lead. But, thanks to the heroics of Persepolis’s goalkeeper Brandon was denied. Goa’s lead did not last for long after that. As Torabi scored from the spot thanks to Donachie’s foul against Alekasir. After the equalizer, Persepolis were on top of their game. Persepolis turned up the pressure on FC Goa and soon their hard work paid off, and in the 24th minute, Persepolis scored again.

The Iranian club dominated the possession since then and made Goa’s defense look vulnerable. In the 38th minute, Persepolis almost scored another goal but Dheeraj came to the rescue and denied Amiri. However, this was not the end of struggles for Goa and Dheeraj. In the 42nd minute of the game, Ivan Gonzalez gave away another penalty. But Dheeraj again denied the shot and the teams headed into the break with the scoreline of 2-1.

The second half kicks-off

The second half resumes and Devendra have come in place of Gama. Persepolis looked determined to snatch the match out of Goa’s hands. The second half saw Persepolis create many chances, but were thwarted on each occasion by Goa’s defense. the number 4 of Gaurs was on another with his tackles, throwing himself in front of the wingers and stopping them dead in their tracks.

As the match went Goa were looking a little more comfortable with the ball and confident while moving the ball. But, sadly the Gaurs captain had to leave the match limping. And have to settle with only one shot on target in the second half. Goa lost the match with a narrow margin but there is nothing to be ashamed of, Goa fought with all heart and created history by becoming the first Indian Super League side to score in the AFC Champions League. The Gaurs should motivate themselves after this match and look forward to doing their best before taking on the same team after three days.

Persepolis have now secured 9 points in 3 matches and are positioned at the top of the league. FC Goa are third in the table with 2 points in 3 matches. FC Goa will face Persepolis again on 23rd of April at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Fatorda, Goa.
