Exclusive: Fernando Santiago Varela all set to join Churchill Brothers Goa as their new head coach

Churchill Brothers vs Sreenidi Deccan

Fernando Santiago Varela is all set to take over the reins at Churchill Brothers.

A source close to the development confirmed that he has signed a one-year deal with the club. The new head coach will be announced very soon by the club.

About Fernando Varela

Fernando Varela is a very well-known coach in Indian football. Before coming to India, he managed clubs like CF Gava, Tecnofutbal, and Almeda CD. He came to India in 2018 as the head coach of Gokulam Kerala FC. Varela stepped down at the end of the season in search of a new challenge.

In 2020, he was heavily linked with the East Bengal FC in their maiden ISL appearance. But the deal didn’t materialize and he joined Churchill Brothers as their head coach. The 2021 IFA Shield winner coach moved on to join Sreenidhi Deccan FC. But he was sacked at the end of the season citing poor performance.

Churchill Brothers in I League 2022

Last season, Churchill Brothers FC performed admirably. They ended in fourth place with 30 points. This season, they will aim to win the title and seek promotion to the ISL. Former Stade Rennes attacker Abdoulaye Sane has been signed to replace Gnohere Krizo, as has Maziya SRC midfielder Tana.

They will, however, miss Bryce Miranda, who departed their club to join KBFC. They have recently parted ways with their head coach Antonio Rueda due to poor performance. Currently, they are in the 6th position with 8 points from 7 matches. Recently they have won matches against Mohammedan SC and Sudeva Delhi FC.

Mateus Costa is most likely to act as the interim coach when they will face RoundGlass Punjab FC on 18th December. Now it will be interesting to see whether the appointment of Varela can bring any changes in their fortunes.
