Gokulam Kerala FC extends Afghan midfielder Mukhammad stay

I-League outfit Gokulam Kerala have extended the contract of 30-year-old Sharif Mukhammad for another 1 year. He joined Gokulam in 2020 and plays as a defensive midfielder.

Mukhammad made his debut in international football against Japan in World Cup qualifiers. Which unfortunately Afghanistan lost by 5-0. In November 2020 Sharif signed for Gokulam Kerala. He scored his first goal against NERCOA FC on 27th March 2021.

Mukhammad have had a very impressive last season helping his team Gokulam Kerala to lift their maiden I-League trophy. Scoring 4 goals in 14 matches. Whenever Mukhammad have played he has dictated the midfield. Sharif’s most memorable match was against TRAU FC. When Gokulam were trailing by 1 goal, and there were only 20 minutes left on the clock. Which was also on the final day of the league. That’s when Sharif scored a wonderful freekick and equalized the scoreline.

After that Gokulam went on to score 3 more goals to secure their first I-League title. Sharif was undoubtedly one of the major contributors to Gokulam’s triumph. Sharif have made 799 passes in total which is only second to Joseba Beitia(825) of RoundGlass Punjab.

Mukhammad Sharif’s thoughts on this contract extension

In an interview, Sharif said that “I am glad to renew the contract with Gokulam Kerala. Last year was a memorable experience for me to be with the Malabarians. We want to win more titles in the upcoming year and I hope we will have another superb season ahead”.

Gokulam’s head coach Vincenzo Anesse is also happy with Mukhammad and Club’s decision. “I am so happy to have Shariff for the next season also”.

Mukhammad is a top-quality player in the league, he is a strong midfielder who also has a lot of experience. Shariff is also very balanced, can switch from defensive phase to attacking phase easily, and can do vice versa also. Sharif is also exceptional when it comes to scoring from the spots.
