Official: Anuj Kumar joins Aizawl on loan

Football

Anuj Kumar would be joining Aizawl FC for the 2021-22 season on loan from Hyderabad FC. The 23-year-old goalkeeper had a stint last season in the I-League with Real Kashmir.

Aizawl are in the rebuilding process and have appointed Yan Law as their new head coach. Whereas, the Nizams have already four options available for goalie position and a loan deal would be beneficial for both parties. Aizawl finished at 7th place last season in the league.

Another I-League experience for Anuj Kumar at Aizawl

Anuj Kumar joined Pune City FC during the 2017-18 season. However, the team was disbanded and came to be known as “Hyderabad FC” since 2019.

The custodian had a loan stint at Indian Arrows in the 2019-20 season as well as a recent stint at Kashmir. But, he had a superb stint at the northerners winning an IFA Shield as well as finishing 5th in the I-League. Additionally, he has won the U-19 IFA Shield and U-17 SAFF Championship as a teen.

Despite not featuring for the Hyderabad club, he is still one of the emerging young goalkeepers in India. Aizawl would be a perfect fit for him as they have been successful in winning matches ensuring proper youth development too.

Aizawl are one of the surprise packages in the lower tier league and are the only club in India to win the I-league 2nd division as well as I-League consecutively. Their 2017 league triumph was very much similar to Leicester City’s 2015-16 fairytale title triumph.

Their defence has been a major concern and Kumar has an opportunity to step up and produce some quality saves for his new club. Whereas, he could make it into HFC squad if he succeeds in his loan stint at the People’s Club.
