CY Goddard leaves Mumbai City FC

CY Goddard completes his loan stint at Mumbai City and has now signed for the Australian club Central Coast Mariners. The 23-year-old midfielder departs from the Indian Super League after winning the double with Sergio Lobera-led Islanders.

Goddard was born in England but has represented Japan at the youth level. As a consequence of the transfer, the champions now need to register at least one Asian signing for the upcoming season of ISL. He will be coming from Benevento for a two-year deal.

A new challenge for CY Goddard awaits him in Australia

Goddard joined Mumbai on loan from Serie B side Benevento. The Japanese attacking midfielder had a superb season playing for 19 matches scoring one goal and assisting twice. Before joining the Italian side, he was an academy product of English giants Tottenham Hotspur.

The defending champions are now on the backfoot after letting go of many of their key players like Amrinder Singh, Bartholomew Ogbeche and Hugo Boumous. However, things might get even better after their takeover by City Football Group.

Whereas, for the Italian club, he made just two appearances and the debut was against Spezia. He also had a stint at Cyprian giants Pafos a season before joining Mumbai City FC.

Mariners’ boss Nick Montgomery is excited about the signing and describes him as a very talented footballer. He says,

“I have been in consultation with Cy many times since we first indicated our interest in bringing him to the Coast, and in every conversation, he has impressed me with both his character and his positive mindset.”

However, with the blockbuster signing of Apuia from NorthEast United, Mumbai are looking even more dangerous considering their Indian players. Additionally, Igor Angulo has now filled the void left by Ogbeche after coming from FC Goa.
