Lee Buchanan snubs Nottingham for Werder Bremen

FINANCIAL FAIR PLAY

Derby County’s Lee Buchanan was on the radar of Nottingham Forest CEO Murphy who was desperate to add the Left back to his side. Three significant €1.5 million bids were rejected by Derby County. This now seems such a foolish decision by the Derby County Management from a financial angle. A loophole in Buchanan’s contract meant he could leave for just €400k. Werder Bremen pounced on this opportunity and signed the left back.

Werder Bremen soon unveiled Lee Buchanan as their new signing. The left-back was a substitute in their 2-1 win over Karlsruhe. Oliver Burke, a former Forest man scored both the goals in Buchanan’s first win with Bremen. Werder Bremen will be hoping for a good partnership between Oliver Burke and Buchanan. Missing out on the left back must have been painful for Nottingham who now will have to explore other options.

The 21 year old is a product of the youth academy of Derby County. He played 31 times under Wayne Rooney and impressed a lot. However, Derby was relegated from the Championship amid all the off-field struggles. A lot of clubs had Buchanan on their shortlist but Werder Bremen was fast in the negotiations.

Derby county’s carelessness in the Buchanan deal

Derby County’s financial struggles are no surprise to anyone. The relegated side has been in huge financial turmoil for a long time now. Lee Buchanan’s deal was a way to have made some money but it was silly business by Derby’s management. Derby County turned down Nottingham Forest’s offer several times. The rivalry between the clubs was a big reason why Buchanan never went to Forest.

Now, he has joined the Bundesliga for such a low fee. Supporters and the staff must be feeling foolish of themselves to have let go of him for so less. Buchanan made 71 appearances for Derby and was an influential player. Forest gained promotion to the premier league and Buchanan will be playing in Bundesliga. The only loser in this deal is Derby County.
