Leipzig confirm Werner signing from Chelsea

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

RB Leipzig confirms that Timo Werner has been signed on a permanent deal from Chelsea. The 25-year-old returns to Leipzig after spending two seasons with Chelsea. The Blues spent £47.5m on the German striker in 2020. Now Chelsea have agreed to sell him to Leipzig for a bargain price. The fee is around £20m, which could rise to around £25m with add-ons. Werner has completed his medical with Leipzig and signed the official contracts also.

The German striker took to social media to announce his departure from Chelsea, thanking that club and the fans for these 2 memorable years. Werner is now back to his parent club, where he spent 4 seasons scoring 90 goals and providing 40 assists. The German never really looked settled at Chelsea and had a lot of problems adjusting to London life. However, there is no doubt that he was vital for their UCL-winning campaign in 2021.

Werner’s form at Chelsea was a hit-and-miss form. The striker was unable to carry on his Leipzig goalscoring form at Chelsea, scoring just 10 times in 56 Premier league games. Werner leaves Chelsea after scoring a total of 23 goals and providing 21 assists in 89 appearances across all competitions. He won 2 trophies in his time at Chelsea, the Uefa Champions League, and the Super cup. Leipzig have also signed Benjamin Sesko on a 5-year deal.

Who Will Replace Werner At Chelsea?

Chelsea have now lost out to Werner. The blues will now look to replace him with a better player that would suit their system more. Sterling was signed for the wing position but apart from that, the attack looks the same. Romelu Lukaku was a failed signing and has moved to Inter Milan until next season. Thomas Tuchel has admitted several times that the squad is still not good enough and more signings have to be made.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang is now a potential replacement for Werner. Thomas Tuchel has made it clear that he will be the perfect striker for the team. Chelsea have contacted Aubameyang but no official bid has yet been submitted to Barcelona. Xavi has also made it quite clear that Aubameyang shall not be sold under any circumstances. The next few days will be interesting for the transfer window.
