Lewandowski wins the Golden Shoe

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has won the golden shoe award for the 2020/21 season. The Poland captain scored 41 goals from his 29 appearances in the Bundesliga to win the award.

Lewandowski outscored the likes of Lionel Messi (30) and Cristiano Ronaldo (29) to win the golden shoe this season. The other players on the top five list are Andre Silva or RB Leipzig (28), Kylian Mbappe of PSG and Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund (27).

The centre-forward was very happy about the award and thanked his friends, family and teammates for their support. Lewandowski is only the second player from Bundesliga to win the European Golden shoe award after the late Gerd Muller. It was Muller’s record that Lewandowski beat in the German top league when he scored 41 goals last season to become the top scorer in a single season.

“I’m very proud and happy. In the season I scored 41 goals there was one moment when I thought I couldn’t do it. And that was the period when I was injured. But then I just thought that I was so close to beating the record, that no matter how many games I get after I come back, I just have to be positive and believe that I can score 41 goals.”- said Lewandowski after receiving the award.

While other top European leagues have 38 games a season. Bundesliga only has 34. His golden shoe-winning feat became even more amazing considering that he only played 29 times for Bayern Munich in the league last season.

Lewandowski who is 33, seem to have hit some of his best forms in the recent seasons. The Polish international do not seem to be slowing down, scoring 11 goals already for Bayern this season. This includes 7 goals for his Bundesliga already, keeping him on course for another European golden shoe.
