Liverpool icon drops hint at retirement after playing last game for current club

Luiz Suarez

On Sunday, former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez played his last game for Brazilian side Gremio. He left in typical style, scoring the only goal in his team’s 1-0 win over Vasco Da Gama.

The 36-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Inter Miami where he was going to reunite with his good friend and former FC Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi. However, Suarez hinted at a retirement from football.

Luis Suarez has been suffering with an injury that may be very serious

After the game Luis Suarez said a few things that hinted at him possibly retiring. Suarez said: “I can feel pain, my body is speaking for me. I want to enjoy and then decide for myself after a long career. I need to rest, enjoy my family… then the destiny will know where I’ll be in the future.”

Suarez added that he is so sore in the mornings he doesn’t think he’ll be able to play football on a smaller scale in a few years, even with his son. “I have to think that in maybe five years I won’t be able to play 5-a-side football with my friends,” Suarez said. “The truth is that the first steps in the morning are very painful. Anyone who sees me thinks it’s impossible for me to play a game. My son tells me asks to play with him and I can’t.”

The Uruguayan added that before each match, he has to take three pills and an injection just to be able to perform. If he does not do that, he won’t be able to play and, at times, walk properly.

Suarez has had an illustrious career

555 goals, 302 assists, 24 trophies, 7 clubs, one man – Luis Suarez. Luis Suarez is regarded by many as the best striker of his generation and he is definitely one of the best strikers to ever grace the game.

It was during his time at Anfield that his profile sky-rocketed and he established himself as one of the most feared strikers in European football. He later joined FC Barcelona where he arguably played the best football of his career. At Barcelona he was a part of one of the most lethal attacking trios ever assembled. The MSN trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar terrorized every defender and player that they came up against.

Whether or not we’ll be able to see Luis Suarez play again still remains unclear.
