Liverpool legend considers the Reds favorites for the Premier League title

Liverpool

The 2021/22 Premier League season concluded on the 22nd of May with an enthralling finish to the season. Manchester City made a marvelous comeback against Aston Villa to clinch a second successive Premier League title. The Citizens have now managed to secure four Premier League titles in the last five seasons.

Liverpool finished in 2nd place despite winning their fixture against Wolves on the final day. It is for the second time in five years that Liverpool finished a solitary point behind the champions, Manchester City. The Mancunian blues had pipped Liverpool to the Premier League title by 1 point in the 2018/19 season as well.

Liverpool legend, Graeme Souness was asked if he believes the two Premier League giants will compete for the title in a two-horse race again. The former Liverpool midfielder opined that the upcoming season will be more competitive than 2021/22.

He believes that Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will also be in contention for the title. Souness expects Manchester City and Liverpool to be the outright favorites. However, he sees Chelsea and Spurs as part of the competition as well after their transfer business in this window.

The summer transfer window is an opportunity for clubs to recruit and refresh their squads. The English clubs have been quite active in the transfer market and have signed some top players.

Premier League giants have recruited smartly for the 2022/23 season

The reigning champions have strengthened their midfield by signing Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United. The Citizens have also made a statement signing by acquiring the sensational Erling Haaland. However, their neighbors, Manchester United have been slower in the market and have completed the signings of Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen.

The Red Devils are in talks to sign Frenkie De Jong and Lisandro Martinez. Erik Ten Hag considers them as priority signings, however, the club is yet to complete the deals. United fans will be hoping for the completion of these transfers soon to ensure that the club does not lag behind.

Liverpool has also strengthened their attack by bringing in Darwin Nunez from Benfica. However, Liverpool has also parted ways with their top star, Sadio Mane. Some might see this as a weakened attack because of the struggles of Roberto Firmino in the past couple of seasons. However, the Reds would be banking on Firmino to produce the goods whenever called upon.

Chelsea and Arsenal have both completed two signings each to strengthen their squad. The Blues have signed Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly. Whereas, the Gunners have signed Fabio Viera and Gabriel Jesus to fill the void left by the departures of Aubameyang and Lacazette.

However, Spurs seemed to have had the best transfer window amongst the Premier League giants. The club has added Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic, and Fraser Forster to their squad. Antonio Conte will be pleased with their summer business and will surely hope to contest for the trophies this season.

Looking at the transfer activity, it is safe to conclude that we are up for an exciting Premier League season. Manchester City and Liverpool will be considered the favourties, however, the Premier League giants by no means should take the others lightly.
