Liverpool ‘serious’ about signing defensive midfield target they’ve been tracking for a while

Its no surprise that Liverpool want a good defensive midfielder in their squad. The Reds have so far performed well this season without a starting defensive midfielder but may choose to bring one in ahead of a run-in. They currently have Wataru Endo and he is not a bad player, but Liverpool could do better. According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are “serious” about bringing in Nice star Khephren Thuram this winter.

Khephren is the younger brother of Inter Milan and France forward, Marcus Thuram. Also, their father, Lilian Thuram won the World Cup with France in 1998.

The Reds couldn’t bring the defensive midfielder of their choice

Liverpool were linked with Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia this summer. However, in the end they were beaten by Chelsea in the pursuit of both players. Ultimately, they only signed Wataru Endo.

So far this season, Klopp has preferred Alexis Mac Allister in defensive midfield alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold inverting from full-back. Liverpool have so far performed well this season without a starting defensive midfielder but may need one as they progress deeper into the season.

Khephren Thuram would fit in well at Liverpool

Thuram has developed into a strong player with an intelligent presence off the ball. He is able to protect the ball in possession. He could compensate for Alexander-Arnold’s so called deficiencies off the ball. Khephren Thuram is good at short passes, carrying the ball from midfield and giving key passes. While he is not so good at tackling, but at the age of just 22, he will only get better.

Thuram has started in 11 Ligue 1 matches this season and made 1 appearance off the bench, playing a total of 912 minutes of football. He also made his senior debut for France this year, coming on as a substitute against Netherlands in the Euro 2024 Qualifiers.
