Manchester United frontrunners to sign Real Madrid defender?

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Manchester United currently leading the race to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. The 27-year-old centre-back had recently demanded the club for an exit from Spain.

Varane has been frustrated with the lack of quality in his current club and is one of the main players for Los Blancos. However, as per the new reports, the club is thinking of renewing the contract of the talented defender.

His contact would expire on June 30, 2022. However, Liverpool and Chelsea had also joined in the race for Varane spearheaded by the Red Devils.

Manchester United to succeed in their repeat attempt to sign Varane?

Manchester United tried to sign Varane back in 2012 and in 2019, but the defender opted to play at Santiago Bernabeu and Zinedine Zidane played a major role in the transfer. However, this would be a great opportunity for the English side if he decides to leave Spain.

For Real, he had made 352 appearances with scoring 17 goals. Thus, he had spent the majority of his career at Madrid joining from French club Lens. The French international had also been a key player for Les Bleus winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Anyways, the centre-back is unhappy with his current club and is “seriously” concerned about his future. Manchester United consider him as an experienced centre-back who can help the team become more commanding in the defence – which has been the biggest concern for them.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are currently sitting at 2nd place and are challenging the current leaders, Manchester City. However, defence has been a major issue and Harry Maguire would be happy to play alongside Varane. The defender is valued at around £75 million.

Additionally, considering Real Madrid’s financial situation, they won’t be letting go of their top players for cheap. The club might be trying their level best to keep the defender at the club. Also, there have been rumours of Sergio Ramos also departing from the Spanish capital.

Currently, other Premier League clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea have also rumoured about their interest in signing Varane. Thomas Tuchel would be looking for a backup for Thiago Silva, who is prone to injuries and Varane would be the best option. Jurgen Klopp would also be looking to strengthen his defensive department to regain their top form.
