Lionel Messi is probably the greatest footballer of his generation and this century. He has won it all. La Liga titles, Ligue 1 title, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and last year Copa America for his nation. But one trophy that has alluded both Messi and Argentina is the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy. The FIFA World Cup 2022, to be held in Qatar may very well be his last chance to win it for Argentina.
Spectacular Messi For Argentina can help to win the World Cup
The 35-year-old has been terrific this year. He has scored 10 goals and featured in 13 assists for his nation. With the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner playing the best game of his life, Argentina has been able to extend their unbeaten run of 35 games. They are only two behind Italy’s record of 37. Within this period, Messi has put the ball in the net 22 times.
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool player, and English commentator is upbeat about Messi’s and Argentina’s chances to finally win the world cup this year. He said:
“He’s the best player that all three of us have ever seen”.
“You have greats who have come before, maybe Pele and Johan Cruyff and of course Diego Maradona, but I would say that Lionel Messi is the greatest player ever to play football”.
“That may not be universal in everybody’s eyes because everyone associates that you almost have to win a World Cup”.
“I would love nothing more in Qatar than Argentina and Lionel Messi to win the World Cup”.
“It would just cement him not just where I see him, but in everybody’s eyes.”
In the twilight of his career
Many believe that Messi would not be playing in the FIFA World Cup scheduled in 2026. Hence, winning the World Cup would be a fine tribute to one of the greatest players who played the game. This must be the earnest desire of Lionel Messi himself. After winning Copa America, it is only the FIFA World Cup that he has to win.
