Northeast United keen on Santana

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Northeast United are reportedly interested in signing Hernan Santana from Mumbai City FC. The 30-year-old midfielder completed his loan stint at the Indian Super League double winners after joining from the Spanish side Girona.

Sergio Lobera won both the titles with the Islanders and Santana was one of the key players. According to Khel Now, the central midfielder had been given a contract.

It has been a quiet transfer market for the Highlanders. But, the wait for a new foreign signing could be finally over!

Hernan Santana to lead a new challenge at Khalid Jamil led Northeast United

Hernan Santana made 19 appearances in his title-winning season scoring two goals. His commanding presence in the midfield threatened opponent defences as well as maintained the possession-based style of play of the Islanders. Additionally, he was a versatile player also having the ability to play as a centre-back.

However, he hasn’t made the loan deal permanent. As a result, the Northeastern club are keen on signing him after a failed negotiation with Kerala Blasters as per the source mentioned above.

Lobera fielded a Guardiola-style of play and Santana dutifully performed his prescribed role. The coach was happy about his arrival. Lobera describes Santana as follows :

Hernán is someone I have worked with in the past in Spain. He is a hard worker, on and off the ball and he adds a lot of character and experience into our squad.”

He won titles for Mumbai City but will he succeed in his new challenge at one of the giant-killers in the league? However, it could be an interesting signing as Khalid Jamil aims for a ISL title being the first Indian coach to ever win the glamorous league.
