Official: Kolkata would be hosting Durand Cup for the next five editions

Kolkata would be the hosts for Durand Cup for another five editions. A press conference was scheduled yesterday about the tournament details and about the future of Asia’s oldest competition.

Addressing the media at Fort William during the unveiling of the iconic Durand Cup trophies in the presence of Shri Aroop Biswas (Hon’ble Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Power in the Govt. of West Bengal), Lt. General Kamal Repswal (Chief of Staff, HQ Eastern Command, SM, VSM) made the announcement confirming the City of Joy as hosts.

However, there would be comparatively less audience allowed to watch the matches as compared to the last edition. But, after a fan-less domestic action, it could be a huge boost for the fans.

Kolkata to host World’s third oldest competition Durand Cup for the next five years too

After a season without the fans attending the match, minimal attendance would be allowed this year. Shri Aroop Biswas (Hon’ble Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Power in the Govt. of West Bengal) spoke about how much attendance could be expected.

According to him, a little less than 50% of stadium capacity would be allowed for the initial group stages. Whereas, 50% attendance would be allowed in the knockouts.

Additionally, General Repswal (Chief of Staff, HQ Eastern Command, SM, VSM) officially announced about the future of the Durand Cup. He said,

“The 129th edition of the Durand Cup was held in Kolkata in 2019. The kind of response the tournament got in Kolkata was immense, with tremendous amount of support from the state government. I must mention it because of every department of the state govt. went out of their way to ensure the tournament becomes a success.”

General Repswal also confirmed that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would also be participating in the inauguration of Durand Cup on 5th September. Gokulam Kerala FC are the defending champions. Mohammedan Sporting Club host Indian Air Force in the opening match on 5th September.
