ATK Mohun Bagan is expected to be monikered MOHUN BAGAN SUPER GIANTS after winning the #REMOVEATK campaign. It has been claimed that ATK Mohun Bagan’s name may be changed to MBSG in order to maintain a relationship with the Indian Premier League’s Lucknow Super Giants squad. The “SG” is also the initials of the owner, ‘S’anjeev ‘G’oenka. Sanjeev Goenka made the announcement after the Kolkata team won its first Indian Super League Trophy on penalties against Bengaluru FC.
Creation of ATK Mohun Bagan
ATK Mohun Bagan is the result of the amalgamation of two Kolkata football teams, ATK and Mohun Bagan. But the Mariners were unhappy with the addition of the ATK prefix to the name of one of India’s most prestigious football teams. Green and Maroons supporters have been vocal in their demand for a new moniker. There have been countless demonstrations, and the supporters’ resilience may now be recognised.
After Mohun Bagan amalgamated with ATK in January 2020, when the RPSG Group became the largest stakeholder in the new club alongside Mohun Bagan Football Club (India) Private Limited to form ATK Mohun Bagan FC, there have been some disagreements between supporters and management.
In 2021, club fans aired their rage, stating that the club’s heritage and reputation were being harmed on a regular basis. However, the ATKMB supporters took to the streets, raising shouts in front of the Mohun Bagan Athletic Club tent. They also marched with banners in front of CESC House in Dharmatala, Kolkata, demanding the removal of the prefix ATK.
From ATKMB TO MBSG
“We are removing ATK, it will be Mohun Bagan Super Giants from next season. Well, it was something that was on the cards. I was waiting for the win to announce it,” Goenka said after the match.
Mohun Bagan wins the Indian Super League on penalties, defeating Bengauru FC 4-3. The Mariners won the ISL title courtesy to a stop from Bruno’s kick and a Perez miss. Dimitri Petratos scored a penalty kick for ATKMB to tie the game. Roy Krishna had just given BFC the lead seconds before. Sunil Chhetri and Dimitri Petratos score once apiece in the first half to tie the game.
