Sankarlal Chakraborty joins FC Bengaluru United as their head coach

I-League 2 team FC Bengaluru United have announced Sankarlal Chakraborty as the new head coach going into the 2023/24 season. FC Bengaluru United were to become one of the franchises of the 2023/24 I-League by bidding, but the promoters could not meet the financial demands. Now the club will mainly focus on the Bangalore Super Division and the I-League 2 with the aim of getting promoted to the I-League.

Sankarlal Chakraborty: Profile

Playing Career

Sankarlal Chakraborty, who was born in Kolkata is a product of the Tata Football Academy. He played as a midfielder and represented Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan AC and East Bengal Club. An injury in 2003 made him quit his playing career.

Managerial Career

Sankarlal took coaching at the academy of the Indian Football Association in 2012. He started pursuing his coaching career at Mohun Bagan since 2014 as assistant coach. Afterwards he worked under Subhash Bhowmick and Sanjoy Sen as an assistant coach. He got the opportunity to manage Mohun Bagan as a head coach during Calcutta Football League in 2017. Thereafter he became head coach for Mohun Bagan in the I-League in 2018.

He would then go on to coach Bhowanipore FC and Mohammedan Sporting. Last season, Sudeva Delhi FC had announced the 47-year-old Chakraborty as their head coach. At the end of season, the club relegated from I-League.

He brings with him tremendous I-League experience. We look forward to him guiding us through various competitions as we renew our bid to reach the I-League on merit,”

said Gaurav Manchanda, owner of FC Bengaluru United.

Speaking on his appointment, Chakraborty said,

“I am delighted to join FC Bengaluru United.

The squad we have this year has a blend of experience, youthful energy and tremendous local flavour. I am looking forward to working with them.”
