Sweden Fernandes joins Chennaiyin FC

Sweden Fernandes is a promising young midfielder. He has been signed by Chennaiyin FC of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) as the team’s first acquisition for the 2023–24 campaign. On Thursday, the club made the signing official via its social media accounts.

“I’m very happy to be here and I’m thankful to the club for giving me this opportunity to prove myself. I’m ready to give my all and I can’t wait to play in front of the Chennaiyin FC faithful,” Fernandes responded.

The Goan player joins the Marina Machans on a multi-year contract. Following strong displays at NEROCA FC while on loan from Hyderabad FC last season. The midfielder has played in 15 games for the Hero I-League team, scoring three goals and adding just one assist.

The signing of 23-year-old Fernandes demonstrates Chennaiyin FC’s dedication to discovering and fostering young Indian potential.

The gifted left-footed teenager has played for the FC Goa. He has also played in Dempo SC, and Sporting club de Goa juvenile squads. This is making him well-known in the Goan football scene. Additionally, he participated for Hyderabad FC in three Durand Cup games last season.

The Chennai-based club’s 2022–23 Indian Super League campaign although ended in a dismal eighth place. With just 27 points to their name. Despite the signing of breakout talent Abdenasser El Khayati, their defence proved to be highly porous. And the squad was unable to advance to the playoffs.

The club was eliminated in the group rounds of the Hero Super Cup, which was also a letdown. All six international players were cut from the squad by Chennaiyin FC. They also lost Anirudh Thapa and Edwin Vanspaul to Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal, respectively.

The club’s decision to recruit Sweden Fernandes is a reflection of its moreover ongoing, intensive search for quality in the I-League.
