Thiago Silva pens down a new contract which will keep him at Chelsea until 2023. This news has come as a sigh of relief for the Blues who still have a few Centre-backs that will become free agents at the end of this season. The Brazilian Defender has become a key member of the London based club since his arrival in 2020. He has been an influential figure at Chelsea who is still vying for 4 trophies this season.
The 37-year-old saw his contract expire with Paris Saint-Germain in 2020 and joined Chelsea as a Free Agent. He came to Stamford Bridge when Frank Lampard was the Head Coach and experienced a sensational last season. However, Chelsea parted ways with Lampard in January 2021 after a poor string of results in the Premier League. The Blues hired Thomas Tuchel as their Head Coach which saw him reunite with Thiago Silva, who left the Ligue 1 giants earlier that very season.
Within just 4 months in-charge at North London, Thomas Tuchel transformed the Chelsea squad. Something that Frank Lampard couldn’t do during his stint as the Head Coach. Later on, in the season, Chelsea won their second UEFA Champions League trophy under Tuchel as they defeated Manchester City by 1-0 in Porto. However, Thiago Silva couldn’t play the whole match due to an injury. Although his determination and leadership qualities have not gone unnoticed as he extends his contract for another year.
Chelsea are slowly balancing their side after the contract extension of Thiago Silva and positive meetings with Romelu Lukaku
Chelsea already has a good mix between the youth and experience in their team. After extending the 37-year-old Brazilian’s contract, they will hope to bring some reinforcements in the Back Four. Players like Matthjis De Ligt and Glesion Bremer were also linked with a move to Chelsea. The Blues are capable of becoming a real force to reckon with in Europe for years to come.
However, Tuchel will hope that Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen will follow in the footsteps of Thiago Silva and extend their contracts. Both the Centre-back’s will see become free agents this summer.
Meanwhile, Thiago Silva has shared his thoughts on his contract renewal.
“To play here with Chelsea is a real pleasure. I never thought I would play for three years here in this great club, so I’m very happy to stay for another season.”
he added
“I’m going to give everything to keep playing at this level in the most important league in the world.”
